Music Monday: Ska

Oh, boys and girls, have I got a treat for you today. Today’s Music Monday is dedicated to ska music. There are only a few genres of music that shaped my teen years and arguably my listening tastes for life. Ska music is unquestionably one. I was first introduced to ska music by my cousin Bree when I was in 8th grade (circa 1999). Bands of choice included O.C. Supertones, The Insyderz, and Five Iron Frenzy (all of which still cater to my earholes).

What is this ska music I speak of?

Ska is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s, and was the precursor to rocksteady and reggae.

Wikipedia

Ska music is fun. It is energetic. It is music that you can’t help but, at a minimum, tap your foot to it. Growing up my 10-disc CD changer (conveniently located in the trunk for easy access while driving) was loaded with at least 8, sometimes 10, ska albums. To this day I don’t think I can listen to any of the songs from those albums without cranking it up to 10. I know this because they contribute(d) to my partial hearing loss.

That’s great and all, but what does it sound like?

Well, I’m glad you asked because I have created a sample playlist of a few of my personal favorites. I must warn you though, the music is infectious and could cause undesired foot-tapping, head bobbing, smiling, and an overhaul happy mood. If those side-effects don’t do it for you, then please refrain from listening. Otherwise, enjoy!

Dude! How could you not list **this** song?!?!

I chose songs that I enjoy for the playlist. I know there are some that I missed, and I will continue to add to the playlist as they come to me. If I had added all the songs that were ska songs, the list would have been endless.

What are your favorites? Don’t be shy, post them in the comments for everyone to enjoy.
